This was a tradition in our household.
Our boys went away to boarding school when they were just eight years old, and every time they returned home for the holidays, there was one thing that simply had to be made for dinner on the very first evening — Shepherd’s Pie.
For us, it always meant homecoming and family time.
There was something so comforting about pulling a freshly baked Shepherd’s Pie out of the oven just as the house filled once again with noise, laughter and endless conversation. Suitcases would still be lying unopened in the rooms, stories from school would begin pouring out at the dinner table, and somehow, this simple dish became a part of that entire ritual of having the family together again.
Over the years, the aroma of the rich lamb filling topped with creamy mashed potatoes became deeply tied to those moments for me.
What I love most about this recipe is that while it is a classic comfort dish, it adapts beautifully to an Indian kitchen. Traditional ingredients like swedes or parsnips are not always easy to find here, so this version uses simple vegetables and ingredients that are available in almost every local market, while still keeping all the warmth and heart of the original dish intact.
And honestly, some of the best family recipes are the ones that evolve quietly over time to suit our own homes and kitchens.
Here is my version of Shepherd’s Pie.
Ingredients
For the Filling
- 500 gm lamb mince (keema)
- 2 medium onions, finely chopped
- 2 carrots, cut into small cubes
- 1 cup frozen peas
- 2 garlic cloves, minced
- 2 tbsp tomato purée
(or 1 large tomato, finely chopped) - 250 ml stock or water
(a mutton stock cube can be added for deeper flavour) - 1 tbsp oil or butter
- Salt and black pepper, to taste
- 1 tsp dried thyme or oregano
For the Mash
- 4–5 large potatoes, peeled and halved
- 50 gm butter
- ¼ cup milk
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- Optional: A handful of grated processed cheese for the crust
Method
Prepare the Mash
- Boil the potatoes in salted water until tender.
- Drain and mash them while still hot with butter and milk until smooth and creamy.
- Set aside.
Prepare the Filling
- Heat oil or butter in a heavy-bottomed pan or kadhai.
- Add the onions and cook until soft and translucent.
- Stir in the garlic and lamb mince and cook on medium-high heat until the meat is browned and any excess liquid has evaporated.
Simmer the Sauce
- Add the carrots, tomato purée and herbs.
- Pour in the stock or water and mix well.
- Cover and simmer on low heat for about 15–20 minutes, until the carrots soften and the mixture thickens into a rich gravy.
- Add the peas during the last 2 minutes of cooking.
Assemble the Pie
- Preheat the oven or OTG to 200°C.
- Transfer the lamb mixture into an oven-proof glass or ceramic dish.
- Spread the mashed potatoes evenly over the top.
- Use a fork to create ridges on the surface — these turn beautifully crisp and golden while baking.
- Sprinkle grated cheese on top if using.
Bake
- Bake for 20–25 minutes until the top is lightly golden.
- For a deeper golden crust, switch on the top grill for the final 2–3 minutes.
A Quick Kitchen Tip
If you do not have an oven, this can easily be finished on the stovetop too.
Simply spread the mashed potatoes over the prepared lamb filling in a heavy pan, cover with a lid and cook on the lowest possible flame for about 10 minutes. It brings all the flavours together beautifully.
Even today, Shepherd’s Pie still reminds me of those holiday homecomings, noisy dinner tables and the happiness of having my boys back home again. Some dishes feed a family, while others quietly become a part of the family itself.
